800 Bucks or Good Ju-Ju

When Eric comes home from work, we usually have a conversation about our day's happenings. Last night was a little different. "Jason and I came up with a great idea," he says. I'm not interested to hear any more. My husband's great ideas usually involve spending money and are usually fishing related. I have the, "just do it and maybe tell me about it later" mentality. So I'm thinking this is exactly what he said-an idea and nothing more.

He starts,"The weather isn't looking good for Parade Day." (The local Mardi Gras Parade where our family owns a bar is this coming Saturday.) My husband follows the weather forecast whenever there is an event (usually fishing) on the horizon. I'm used to this. He'll start his meteorological endeavors weeks in advance. His anxiety over the rain, wind, snow, heat, and temperature is a nauseating roller coaster ride. I chide him. "You have no control over any of this. Just stop checking the forecast. No matter what is predicted, you'll still go and have a great time."

His dedication is unwavering. Maybe if he obsesses enough, the weather Gods will be merciful and grant him his deepest weather desires. It's kind of like washing the car. If he washes the car, rain will happen within 24 hours. I must admit, he DOES have an amazing carwash/rain record. He believes in something supernatural where the weather is concerned.

So despite my complete lack of interest, he shares his and Jason's "great idea". Eric, "It's going to rain and people are going to want rain ponchos." Yes, I suppose most people don't want to get drenched in cold rain while spending an entire day getting drunk in the streets of Soulard. Eric, "I looked online and found ponchos for a dollar each-shipped." I was disinterested in this conversation from the get go, but before I can redirect it... Eric, "I ordered 200 ponchos." Me-shocked, disbelief, say that again?

Before I can get upset, he says, "But, Kim, I'll sell them for $5 each and make $800. And if it doesn't rain, then my purchase will ensure good weather ju-ju. It's a win win situation!" He then goes on to tell me that Busch Stadium sells the same ponchos for $5 and if it doesn't rain this Saturday, he will sell them to customers riding our family's shuttle to baseball games this summer.

I'm actually kind of impressed that he acted on this idea so quickly. He just did it. I usually try and talk him out of things. Sometimes I think in certain situations, it is best if he acts first and tells me afterward. I'm interested in seeing how this pans out. I'm hoping for sunny skies and a pocketful of cash.
