Today I practiced lots of new things (not surprising as it was my second lesson!). I stood in the saddle to check for my posture (it sucked). I will get there though. I posted for the first time. Not the greatest. I guess as my posture improves, my posting will too? The greatest thing I did was trot!! I had never trotted before.
The first time, I jiggled and bounced and my bottom smacked the saddle hard! It did get better each time. In the end, I was siting up straight, not arching my back, tucked my butt under me, held the reigns so that they made a straight line from the horse's bit to my hands, I peddled my feet, I rocked forward (to get Buzz moving), I didn't tighten the reins, I relaxed, and I learned to use the crop. Now if I can just remember to do all of this next time!
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
HALTER: what the horse wears-it doesn't have a bit or reins. It has the LEAD ROPE that is used when walking the horse from the stall to the grooming area.
The halter or bridle is always unbuckled from the strap under the horse's head.
BRIDLE: is like a halter, but with reins and a bit.
Hold the bridle from the top.
GROOMING: Before the ride, use the CURRY COMB in a circular motion especially where the saddle sits. Next, the HARD BRUSH, brush with a flicking motion. HOOF PICK-clean the feet. Horses front legs have a CHESTNUT which you can pinch to get the horse to pick up its leg.
After the ride- SOFT BRUSH-brush with a flicking motion.
The front of the SADDLE PAD should align with the middle of the horse's front legs.
To get the SADDLE ON, place your back to the horse and the front of the saddle facing the horse's tail. With a swinging motion, swing the saddle high up and over the horse while turning.
Don't put the CROP strap on wrist-dangerous if you would fall. It could get caught on something.
Store the SADDLE PAD upside down so that it dries.
More tips to come!
