The end of 2008 was a fun, unexpected surprise. We had an invitation to dinner at a friends-but decided against it. I thought about going out to a restaurant and then going to Our Lady of the Snows to drive through their display, but fear of waiting in a three hour line nixed that idea. Then we remembered how our dog goes crazy when there are loud sounds outside and we knew there would be a lot of fireworks so the decision to stay home was made.
We were just going to have a meal of potato latkes with sour cream and smoked salmon-a meal I had planned on making earlier in the week. Then, the phone call. Eric instructed me to go the butcher at Herrell's and get steak. The girls and I did that little errand and then spent the afternoon walking the mall with my dad.
As I was dropping my dad off at home, another phone call. Eric has a "great idea". "Lets have a formal dinner for just the four of us. We'll all dress up and you and the girls will do your hair and makeup. We'll drink from your fancy wine goblets and dine by candlelight while listening to classical music." Me-"Oh, yeah, okay, fun idea". Which is the exact opposite of what I was really thinking.
The girls were thrilled. They got themselves dressed in their prettiest dresses and shoes. They put colorful streaks in their hair using Audrey's new hair thingy. We all three did our makeup and spritzed expensive perfume on. I reluctantly got in the pretty strapless gown I wore as a bridesmaid earlier in the year.
After getting all done up, I finally started enjoying myself. The girls and I danced and danced in the kitchen to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard. We had a total blast while Eric grilled the steaks. We giggled and twirled in our pretty dresses.
Dinner was by candlelight and we had to say goodbye to our country music in favor of the sounds of classical. Eric and the girls talked in very proper and pompous sounding accents. I occasionally joined in. It turned out to be a very fun and memorable dinner.
We had creme brulee for dessert and then "retired to the parlor for a fire and a game of dancing eggs" which was crazy fun. Unfortunately we all fell asleep watching Annie Get Your Gun, waking up at midnight to the sounds of fireworks. We enjoyed the display from the window and banged drums on our deck.
2008 was a good year. I can only hope that 2009 will be even better.
