Run for the Wall 2009

The girls and I just saw my dad and hundreds of other bikers off.  This is my dad's second trip with Run for the Wall.  Like last time, they met up at Jefferson Barrack's Veteran's Hospital.  It is such a moving and powerful experience.

The sound of the bikes entering the hospital grounds is a glorious rumble of excitement.  It is a brotherhood that is taken very seriously.  I'm so proud of my dad for being part of this.  I would love to participate one year.  Me on my own Harley?  You never know about these things...

The bikers roll in and are greeted by newcomers joining the ride like my dad.  Most people congregate in a lower courtyard that offers picnic tables and shade trees.  There are refreshments galore (cake, drinks, chips, and fruit).  There is a speaker system set up and various folks say a word or two-the guy in charge of the Missouri RFTW, the director of the hospital, veterans, a chaplain, and of course, someone singing the national anthem.

The hospital workers venture out.  There are patients in wheel chairs and stretchers out to meet everyone.  The bikers make special trips inside the hospital to visit with those who can't come out.  Hospice and spinal cord injuries were the two buildings they were invited in.

The folks with the RFTW always take the time to speak to my girls.  They both received U.S.A/P.O.W. pins.  Bikers ask my children for their prayers for a safe trip.  My girls are only happy to oblige, as their Pa Pa is a fellow rider.

I love that everyone is a brother, a friend, and a valued member of the experience.  The motto of, "We ride for those who can't"  really resonates in all that they do.  I am glad that we could participate in the grand send off.  It makes me take a moment and really think about our military-the most sacrificial individuals of our country.  May God bless and protect all of our veterans.
