Kid's Wetlands Day 2009

Yesterday, I took my girls to Busch Wildlife Nature Reserve for the Kid's Wetlands Day. It was our first time there. It was so vast and beautiful. I was afraid that it would be overly busy and crowded, but I didn't find that to be true at all.

When we got there, we immediately met up with my parents and sister and her family. I was lucky to end up parking right by the area with the live snakes. Ava was immediately happy. We got to touch a Prairie Kingsnake and a Bull Snake. Ava tickled the snakes and talked to them like they were her babies. They were so beautiful.

We went to the main building after that and the girls got to go into a mock beaver lodge. It was a huge mounded tent. They had to crawl in (much like a beaver enters its lodge). They stayed inside for ten minutes. There was a man inside that talked to the kids about beavers. The girls loved it. They learned that a beaver will use its tail to ward off predators and to warn one another.

We ventured outside and were treated to fried catfish which was yummy. From there, the kids went into the woods and walked on fallen trees and climbed everything that could be climbed. It was so enjoyable just being out and letting the girls explore and roam. I love the fearlessness and excitement they have for life.

We ended our day with two rounds of fishing. We picnicked at Lake Six and fished a little. We then took them to Lake Twelve which is the kid's lake and played and fished there the rest of the day.

I can't wait to take the girls back to fish and picnic again soon. We will definitely go back again next year for the Wetland's Day. Maybe next time, we'll catch a fish!
